Nilgiri Tahr (Saddleback)

It was a long time wish for me to photograph the Handsome Nilgiri Tahr (Saddleback). On the way to Chinnar WLS, we stopped at Eravikulam National park hoping for the handsome one. We reached Rajamala, and was very much glad to see many grazing. At the same time was very very much sad. There was a hell lot of mist and there was no chance of getting a shot that I was looking for. We waited there for a long time and finally the mist took a shot break giving a very soft lighting to the environment. Knowing that this was not going to last for much, I followed one which I found a bit co-operative. I took some shots which was fine, but not satisfying. Finally I had to do some prediction to where this buddy was gonna move. I found a good place, stayed there for a bit more longer when I finally got my desired posture. I was luck enough for the climate as Soon after this shot, the mist reappeared.

I was sooooooo happy to get this guy on my cam and also thank Dr. Naseer Ommer for letting me use his Canon 5D and Canon 400mm L. The result is awesome.

A vulnerable species endemic to the western ghats. The species has been found to occur only above 1200 m altitude in the higher hill ranges of southern India and the species is highly threatened by habitat loss.

Crested Goshawk | Accipiter trivirgatus

The Crested Goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus) is a bird of prey from tropical Asia. It is related to other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards (or buteos) and harriers, and thus placed in the family Accipitridae.

The male has a dark brown crown, grey head sides and black moustachial and throat stripes. The pale underparts are patterned with rufous streaks on the breast and bars on the belly. The larger female has a browner head and brown underpart streaks and bars. The juvenile has pale fringes to its head feathers, and the underpart background colour is buff rather than white.

The Pied Bushchat (Saxicola caprata) is a familiar bird of countryside and open scrub or grassland where it is found perched at the top of short thorn trees or other shrubs, looking out for insect prey. They nest in cavities in stone walls or in holes in an embankment, lining the nest with grass and animal hair. The males are black with white shoulder and vent patches whose extent varies among populations. Females are predominantly brownish while juveniles are speckled.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary recently made as a tiger reserve is situated in the Palakkad district of the Indian state of Kerala. Though it is situated in Kerala, one have to enter into Parambikulam trough Tamil Nadu. The sanctuary is a very well maintained place and one and not even point out a piece of plastic or waste in the sanctuary. Hats off to the wildlife warden of Parambikukam Mr. Sanjayan Kumar, IFS for maintaining it in such an efficient form.

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is well known for it’s very rich bio diversity. One can find a verity of wild animals and birds here. More about Parambikulam is found Here
